Picking a Perfect Perfume

Perfumes usually unfold in three (often very different) stages: the sparkling first few minutes are the fragrance's top note, followed by its true personality, known as the heart note, and ending with the base note, aka the drydown, hours later. Something you love at the counter you may loathe by the parking lot. 2. Write it down

South Park - The Complete Eighth Season
To quote Bad Day at Black Rock, a man is as big as what'll make him mad. By this criteria, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are giants. Fanaticism of any stripe, steroids, vapid pop culture icons marketed as role models for impressionable youth, and mass merchants encroaching on small town life are just some of the hot button issues tackled in South Park's eighth season. Of course, South Park is not above (or beneath) stooping to conquer, as witness "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset," which climaxes in a "whore-off" featuring--you guessed it--Paris Hilton. Sure, Paris is an easy target, as is Michael Jackson (portrayed in the episode "The Jeffersons" not as a child molester, but as an infantile parent who needs to grow up). But just as a segment of the population tunes in to The Daily Show to get Jon Stewart and company's satirical take on the day's news, so do South Park fans eagerly await Parker and Stone's perspective on the zeitgeist. Which brings us to the season's most infamous episode, "The Passion of the Jew," in which Kyle is devastated by Mel Gibson's brutalizing epic, Cartman is transformed into Gibson's Hitlerian apostle, and an unimpressed Stan and Kenny try in vain to get their money back from Gibson himself, a loony toon with a penchant for torture. And while Janet Jackson's Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction is old news, South Park's response, "Good Times with Weapons," remains a relevant satire of misplaced parental priorities, not to mention an anime-stylized tour-de-force in which the boys purchase martial arts weapons at a county fair and imagine themselves as ninja warriors.In one of Stone and Parker's candid mini-commentaries, available as a listening option on each episode, the duo grade this season a B+. Give them extra credit, then, for such seriously (or hilariously) twisted episodes as the one (whose title cannot be printed here) that sends up the film You Got Served, and the instant holiday classic "Woodland Critter Christmas," with its Satan-worshiping forest creatures, and a brilliant surprise ending that echoes Chuck Jones's classic cartoon Duck Amuck, in which the unseen animator tormenting poor Daffy is revealed to be none other than Bugs "Ain't I a stinker?" You know the one about the group of horny kids who get offed one by one? Yeah, so do director Jaume Collet-Serra and his screenwriters, who have updated an old Vincent Price flick and sandwiched it between hearty slices of The Blair Witch Project and various Friday the 13th films. Lots of WB and Fox network hotties--including 24's Elisha Cuthbert, One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray, and, well, Paris Hilton--have car trouble and stumble onto a town populated by real killer personalities. The R-rated result is fairly gruesome and, though no one ever quite looks frightened enough, Collet-Serra knows his way around a jolting suspense sequence or two. Cuthbert and an unintentionally funny Murray (striking ludicrous poses as some kind of real toughie) act more like angry ex-lovers than the fraternal twins they're supposed to be; Hilton acts bored while her real-life video scandal is exploited for ironic kicks; and the film heads shamelessly over-the-top with each new twist. The Simple Life - The Complete Second Season (Road Trip)
For Depression-era audiences, much of the fun of screwball comedies such as It Happened One Night and My Man Godfrey, was the pleasure of watching rich people act like loons or get their redemptive comeuppance from some Average Joe. The same vicarious kicks are at play in the sophomore season of The Simple Life, in which Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie drive from Florida to California. With no cash or credit cards, they must depend on the kindness of strangers (invariably nonplussed men whom the ladies approach for handouts at toll booths, gas stations, or fast food joints). The series takes great delight in putting the pampered and privileged duo in embarrassing situations, such as getting them jobs as maids at a nudist resort. But through it all, our uneasy riders are game for almost anything and never lose their 'tude. And just when their antics try the viewers' patience or sympathy (at the nudist resort, they shamelessly goldbrick on the job, posing as guests and calling for a maid to clean up the room for which they are responsible), they somehow redeem themselves. On a cattle drive, they pull a City Slickers and save one steer from slaughter. But comeuppance? These girls don't know the meaning of the word (insert your own joke here). They are forced to take it from several of their less-than-impressed hosts, but they also dish it out, as witness one episode in which one unwitting antagonist is served a dog food sausage courtesy of Nicole. Reality show star, amateur porn hobbyist and regular party fixture; hotel heiress Paris Hilton has decided she would also like to try her hand at being a pop singer. Just because you suspect she hasn't had any formal musical training, never paid dues by belting her heart out with the Mickey Mouse Club, or that she quite possibly bought her way into this whole racket on an expensive whim shouldn't stop you from spending a few frothy minutes with her opening shot, Paris. The single "Stars Are Blind" has a nice breezy faux-reggae vibe, producer Scott Storch sprinkles several tracks with his billion-dollar beats and there's even a tuneless version of "Do Ya Think of Sexy" that actually makes the original sound good. The Simple Life - The Complete Third Season (Interns)
The biggest joke of The Simple Life concept is that the audience is in on the joke. Granted, the joke isn't always that funny, but it's funnier when the girls -- Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, a pair of pampered royal New York brats -- aren't in on it. Like its predecessors, this compilation edition of the reality TV show continues the same basic conceit of plopping the girls in outrageous blonde-out-of-water situations and watching the sparks fly. This time they're tasked to be interns and actually work ("Work?!? Us?!?") at places like a plastic surgery clinic, an airline, a mortuary, a nursing home, an automotive shop, etc., etc. Of course it's all set up as an intentional joke on the sometimes angry, sometimes befuddled, sometimes good-humored "employers" and host families they're stuck with. More than that, it's just a series of staged scenes with some goofy video verite added when necessary. Any sense of comic timing comes from the ironic editing, silly sound effects, and equivalent of spit-takes reaction shots from the real people around them who can't believe their eyes. We shouldn't believe our eyes either, because it really is all a put-on. The train-wreck appeal of The Simple Life is that the girls go around making fun of lower class and white trash living, but they're pretty much complete idiots themselves.
